Webb Australia Group is proud to be the Specialist Lighting Designers working as part of the METRON design team that includes Mott MacDonald, Arcadis, Foster + Partners, Architectus, Arcadia and Group DLA for the Barangaroo Metro Station and the surrounding Public Domain. This landmark transport project is an underground station, 25 metres underneath Hickson Road, south of Munn Street. This station makes the northern Barangaroo precinct and the Barangaroo Reserve headland park accessible to the public for generations to come.
The lighting design expresses the volume of the underground concourse by revealing the textures of the local sandstone brick walls, featuring “Ïn Time We Shall” an installation of steel and cooper trees by Western Sydney artist Khaled Sabsabi.
Using an array of specialist track mounted and surface luminaires from ERCO, concealed between the concrete beams and within ceiling service channels, the lighting is designed to be glare-free and unobtrusive, keeping the concourse areas free for pedestrian movement. Challenges with these high spaces is being able to illuminate the sandstone walls without scalloping and shadows to reveal the textures by grazing uniformly from top to bottom and the floor without concentrated pooling.
